Attending the workshop were Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong,inter – fiorentina Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and representatives of related departments and agencies.

The phase 2 of CarBi project aims to strengthen natural resource management of transboundary natural forest areas, stretching to 242,000 hectares in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam provinces of Vietnam and two provinces - Sekong and Salavan of Laos.

The project is implemented by WWF and its partners in four provinces in the Central Truong Son area, where there are the largest and seamless natural forests in Asia; high biodiversity with 134 mammal and over 500 bird species.

According to Mr. Van Ngoc Thinh, Director of WWF, this project will continue to focus on addressing major threats to biodiversity and ecosystems in the region; enhance the participation of local people and encourage them to change their behavior.

In addition, the project will implement programs to support livelihoods for people,in order to reduce the motivation for illegally exploiting the natural resources. A new approach is the Village Development Funds program, being managed by the people themselves to change their livelihoods or increase income from agroforestry or other livelihood activities. At least 50 hamlets, of which 30 in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam will benefit from this activity.

Vice Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong noted the achievements of the CarBi Project phase 1, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the Federal Republic of Germany, implemented by WWF Vietnam in Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam in 6 years (2010-2016) with a funding of nearly EUR 2 million.

"We hope the Carbi Project Phase 2 will be successful and commit to ensure that the project activities are carried out publicly, transparently and practically to the people and localities," Mr. Phuong emphasized.
