HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam resolutely opposes and rejects China’s new regulations on a fishing break at sea, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lê Hải Bình said yesterday.
He was responding to reporters’ questions about an official announcement by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture on the regulations that also cover some of Viet Nam’s East Sea (South China Sea) territory.
Bình reiterated that Việt Nam has sufficient legal ground and historical evidence affirming its sovereignty over the Hoàng Sa (Paracel) archipelago as well as legitimate rights over its waters in line with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
“Such a unilateral decision made by China is a serious violation of Việt Nam’s sovereignty over Hoàng Sa, as well as her legal rights and interests over her waters, and international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS and relevant international legal documents,” Bình said.
"It runs counter to the spirit and wording of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and continues to make the East Sea situation complicated and tense," he added. – VNS
